Club information> Chairman's report

It was with some trepidation that I accepted the invitation to stand for Chairman of Stowmarket Swimming Club, 2006. Knowing what an excellent job my predecessor Bill Blackaby had done, it was always going to be a difficult act to follow. Thanks to the dedication, professionalism and commitment of the committee and the numerous volunteers my fears were unfounded. My thanks to all these people who give their time so readily to ensure the smooth running of the club.

A number of comments I have picked up during the year highlight the strengths of Stowmarket Swimming Club. The first was from an official of another club at this years county championships, “Stowmarket consistently punches well above its weight”, and from another club official, “I wish our swimmers were as keen and well behaved as yours” and a third from a club member, “Shaun's training programmes are innovative and training is far more enjoyable as a result”.

Our president Bobbie Wilson has received another much deserved award in recognition for the work she has been doing over a long period for swimmers with disabilities. This award also reflects the work done by our poolside helpers and our younger swimmers who help in the pool with the swimmers.

As a club our swimmers have enjoyed success and recognition at national, Regional, County and Club levels. Although not intending to single out individuals Aaron Lynch's achievements have been outstanding. Certainly one to watch for the future. On the wider county scene we are members of the Suffolk Association of Volunteer Organisations and are the first sports club to be invited to join the Suffolk Volunteer Federation. Long tem this should help us in obtaining support and recognition in a number of areas.

Membership of the club has just about reached capacity with new swimmers waiting to be assessed for induction. It is with some regret that we have had to take some of our events to other pools. The lower cost of pool hire at other venues helps in keeping our overhead costs down.

To the future new volunteer help is always welcome. It is important for any committee that is enjoys a regular influx of new members. We need in particular volunteers interested in fund raising and with expertise in grant application. Becoming an official is not difficult and most of our teachers gained their qualifications having initially volunteered to help.

Finally my congratulation tot eh swimmers for some excellent performances during the year and my thanks to the volunteers who work so tirelessly. Both swimmers and Volunteers make Stowmarket in my opinion, the best swimming club in the county.
